reduced hybrid fertilityWhen two different species produce a hybrid that is viable and does complete development. However, the offspring is sterile and cannot reproduce. This is because the different number of chromosomes in the parents lead to abnomral gametes for the hybrid.
One of the more well known examples is the mule, an offspring of a horse and a donkey. Mules are hardy and vigorous animals but, they cannot reproduce. |
