Polyploidy and Speciation

Two Types of Polyploidy:
- Autopolyploid: an organism that has more than two sets of chromosomes derived from the same species. (The above example).
- Allopolyploid: are organisms that are fertile when mating with each other but cannot inter- breed with either parent species; thus, they represent a new biological species. Therefore they have more than two sets of chromosomes that are derived from different species. (Ex. The creation of hybrids. They must be fertile hybrids to create a new species. This usually only occurs in plants.)
