Charles Darwin and the Galapagos Finches
Geospiza MAGNIROSTRIS (BIG BEAKED FINCH)Darwin found that this finch was very well adapted for the big seeds in the surrounding areas, as well as, it appeared more frequently during the drought as its beak was able to hold more water. (They are an example of directional selection.)
Certhidea olivasea (Small beaked finch)Darwin found that these finches were better adapted to environments with small seeds. They appeared more frequently on the islands with the smallest and most fragile seeds. (They are an example of directional selection.)
Geospiza Parvula (Medium beaked finch)Darwin learned that these finches were more adapted to environments with medium seeds and therefore were found on islands with medium seeds, as well as they were able to survive better than small beaked finches during the drought. They are an example of stabilizing selection).
